Action Alert: Vote for Puget Sound Wild Steelhead Gene BanksAugust 12, 2015
WDFW is currently accepting comments on your preferred Gene Bank Rivers for each region through August 31, 2015.
8/12/2015 - Update: Comment period extended through August 31, 2015. WDFW also began restricting the means by which individuals and organizations can provide comments. Currently the only way to comment is through an online form. This nonintuitive form is overly simplified and does not allow individuals and groups to provide complete technical comments with supportive reasoning and references. This "muzzling" of the public by WDFW prevents individuals and organizations from appropriately submitting thoughtful and substantive comments, and is a clear barrier that will keep many people from commenting. WFC is trying to make it easier for you to voice your opinion. Please continue to use our online action alert tool as a method of commenting. Following your submission, you may receive an email from WDFW saying they will not accept comments via email. Please disregard this message. Wild Fish Conservancy will make sure your voice is heard.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is currently accepting comments on selecting "Wild Steelhead Gene Banks" in three Puget Sound Regions: (1) North Cascades, (2) Central/South Puget Sound, and (3) Hood Canal and Strait of Juan de Fuca. WDFW's Gene Bank determination is part of an ongoing process by the agency to reduce the impacts of their steelhead hatchery programs on select wild steelhead populations across the state. Research shows that hatchery fish negatively impact wild populations and compromise efforts to recover them. WDFW is currently accepting comments on your preferred Gene Bank Rivers for each region through August 31, 2015.
